Fundación CANNA

Informing cannabis users worldwide.

We believe that our responsibility goes beyond producing high quality fertilisers. We also carry a duty to support research, share knowledge, and help people make informed decisions. Fundación CANNA is an important part of how we live up to that responsibility.

What is Fundación CANNA?
Fundación CANNA is a non profit organisation founded by CANNA España in 2012. It is based in Barcelona and runs its own research laboratory at the University of Valencia. The foundation studies the cannabis plant and its compounds, with a strong focus on quality, safety, and reliable information.

The laboratory performs advanced analysis of cannabinoids, terpenes, and contaminants such as pesticides or heavy metals. All work follows strict scientific standards, ensuring accuracy and trust.

Why we exist

The foundation was created because people deserve to know exactly what they are consuming. In a world where information can be confusing or misleading, Fundación CANNA provides clarity through science. It also supports independent research, funds studies, and collaborates with scientists across the world to expand knowledge about cannabis.

Education is a key part of its mission. The foundation publishes articles, produces videos, and shares findings in ways that are accessible for both professionals and the wider public.

Why It Matters for CANNA

For us, Fundación CANNA represents more than research. It embodies our values.

  • It shows that CANNA stands for transparency, safety, and integrity.
  • It demonstrates that we do not just sell products, we also share knowledge and promote science.
  • It connects us with the global research community and strengthens our reputation as pioneers.
  • It helps us lead by example, by combining product expertise with a genuine commitment to education and responsibility.

CANNA Substrate Production

CANNA substrates are sourced and processed at specific locations all having the capacity and expertise to fulfill their role in the production process of our quality substrates. After sourcing the coco in India, or peat in the Baltics the raw materials will be send to the processing facilities. Majority of these facilities are located in the Netherlands where strict quality control takes place by RHP. Substrate products always meet high quality standards.

In the video, you see the processing of Coco in the Netherlands after arriving from India. The Coco is carefully washed in India and sun-sterilized. In the Netherlands the product is buffered to stabilize and serve as a perfect substrate for plants.

CANNA Research

Driven by curiosity

CANNA Research: the place where curiosity meets research. On a daily basis more than 25 experts develop, test and improve our beloved products.

25 years ago we started in a small corner, testing quality. Over time we deceloped in what we are today: a research facility for formulating and testing liquid and solid fertilisers, substrates and biostimulants. With our exemption from the Dutch Opium Law, we conduct research on cannabis as well as on conventional crops. Our work takes place in several greenhouse compartments, two climate-controlled growth chambers, and a laboratory for analysis and product development.

Our laboratories
In our facility, we use several unique laboratories, each essential to our mission. In our first lab, we dive into the world of liquid fertilizers and plant biostimulants. Here, we analyse everything from nutrient composition to cannabinoids using advanced tools like HPLC and ICP. With HPLC, we uncover the secrets of cannabinoids, while ICP reveals the elemental makeup, including vital nutrients and potential contaminants. We also explore terpenes with GCMS, allowing us to understand the aromatic profiles that enhance the appeal and effectiveness of our products.

In our microbiological laboratory, we cultivate virus-free plantlets under sterile conditions to maintain reliable research material. We test the shelf life of our fertilisers in relation to microbes and study how plants resist disease, identifying beneficial microbes that support growth. In our molecular laboratory, we analyse plant DNA and RNA to determine which genes are active at a given time. This helps us understand how plants respond to treatments and which genes influence growth and resilience. With these findings, we refine our products to improve their effectiveness.

What's next
Looking ahead, we will continue advancing our research and developing our products. Our focus is on providing dependable solutions for agriculture and horticulture, with a clear emphasis on sustainability. Drawing on our history and experience, we aim to deliver quality that can be measured in practical results. After all, Quality proves itself.

CANNA Research & Knowledge Center

In Canada we have our Research and Knowledge center near Montreal. CANNA co-worker William Fournier and his wife run their own fully licensed cannabis production facility. Here they grow cannabis for the legal commercial markets. And their facilty serves as a CANNA showroom for other cultivators, showcasing how you can effectively grow indoor and outdoor with a simple and cost-efficient set up using the CANNA products. For example in 2024 over 120 other LP members visited the location. Next to growing itself the facility also serves as an extension of CANNA Research in the Netherlands, trialing new products and systems as well as coming up with knowledge about cultivation techniques and challenges.

CANNA Production

Where craftmanships meets modern technology

Somewhere in the Dutch town of Oosterhout, you’ll find one of CANNA’s key facilities: CANNA Production. Here, over 15 million litres of nutrients are blended, filled and prepared each year. That’s the equivalent of six Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Founded in 1999 and run by a team of more than 30 experienced staff members, CANNA production brings together hands-on craftsmanship and modern technology. All formulas are mixed in-house, with batch sizes ranging from just 1 litre up to 20,000 litres, from 10ml samples to full scale 3,000L productions.
